About

The Food Industry Association (FMI) is a national trade organization dedicated to advancing a safer, healthier, and more efficient consumer food supply chain across the United States. Established in 1977 through the merger of the Super Market Institute and the National Association of Food Chains, the organization rebranded in 2020 from "Food Marketing Institute" to reflect its expansive representation of the entire food marketplace. FMI unites a diverse membership of food retailers, wholesalers, producers, and critical service providers, serving as a vital forum for dialogue and problem-solving. Its core activities include robust public policy advocacy at federal and state levels, comprehensive research into consumer behavior and operational benchmarks, and extensive education programs, notably in food safety. The association actively addresses imperative industry issues – such as labor shortages, supply chain disruptions, evolving consumer behaviors, and accelerating technology transformation. Among its significant contributions, FMI acquired the Safe Quality Food (SQF) supplier certification program in 2003, enhancing global food safety standards. It also promotes the "family meal movement" and National Family Meals Month, underscoring a commitment to feeding families. FMI recognizes industry excellence through awards like the Sidney R. Rabb Award, informing business decisions across the $1 trillion food industry that employs over 6 million people and serves more than 120 million U.S. households.
