About

Alastair McKenzie is a travel professional, blogger, and journalist with a career spanning several decades. Since 2016, he has operated Mechtraveller.com, a specialized blog dedicated to "mechanically-minded travel." His expertise centers on historic, mechanical, and technical attractions, encompassing battlefield sites, military and technical museums, factory tours, transport infrastructure, and significant engineering and architectural achievements. Through Mechtraveller, he explores destinations where history and innovation converge, offering in-depth insights into the technical and historical layers of a place. Before establishing Mechtraveller, McKenzie spent a decade as a travel editor and presenter for local, national, and international radio, including Classic FM, starting in 1989. He transitioned online before the millennium, becoming an active voice within the travel blogger and content creator community and a frequent speaker at social media travel conferences. A member of the British Guild of Travel Writers since 2002, he currently serves as its International Liaison, fostering alliances across the global travel writing community. His recent work includes co-authoring "D-Day Landings: A Travel Guide to Normandy's Beaches and Battlegrounds," published by Bradt Guides in March 2024. In 2022, he was a finalist for "Travel Blog Post of the Year" and "Travel Blogger of the Year" at the British Guild of Travel Writers Members Excellence Awards, and for "Best Written Piece" at the Traverse Creator Awards.
